Today with Dick Johnson, Diane Mulholland and Jesse Stewart, the male
Gray-crowned Rosy Finch was found right where Tom Schooley and his group
reported it. It was associating with a small flock of mostly adult
White-crowns and at least one Song Sparrow. It seemed to be most closely
with the Song Sparrow. One can walk all the way around the old lighthouse
complex without trespassing even at high tide. It came off the rocks at the
north side of the complex and flew around lighting on fences and the ground
and gave no indication that it wanted to fly away. It is a nicely marked
male apparently of the coastal race (ours). We spent no time after finding
it as it began to rain. I suspect someone at the fisheries complex may be
feeding the birds but we did not see any feeders. One woman came out and
talked to us about a probable adult Golden Eagle harassing a couple of
smaller Balds. She only saw the underside but mentioned spontaneously that
it did not have the white speckling she associates with immature Balds. At
that point Jesse saw the Rosy Finch and I rushed for the bird.
The Bluejay was found after a wait at Port Hadlock at 2nd and Maple with
the help of Dick and Jesse.
Little of great note was seen at Oak Bay CP except a pair of Eared
Grebes and one Thayer's Gull with Mews and the local hybrid gulls. There was
a good variety of waterfowl but Diane says she has only seen one Brant Goose
at a time so far except for a small flock flying north. No other sites were
covered.
