Actually I believe Old Squaw was the actual name that was widely recognized. Another one was the American Wigeon, which used to be known in my youth as the Bald Pate. Seems many bird names change over time, either when they are found to be two types combining into a single species (see Myrtle's and Audubon's Warblers aka Yellow-rumped Warblers or my personal fave, Butter-butts). It's all part of the fun, sometimes infuriating hobby we call birding!

Hi Tweets,

are Redhead ducks, nick named blue bills? (would make sense)

in the olden days growing up in Washington State we called Long Tailed Ducks, Old Squaw guess that also was a nick name.

thanks in advance
