Coincidentally, in reply to all the threads lately on Varied Thrushes and
suet, I happened to look out at our two hanging suet cages this morning
and--lo and behold--there was a female Va Th sitting atop one of cages and
clearly picking at and eating the suet, which went on for about 5 minutes
before she flew off. During our most recent cold spell here, with
temperatures in the high-teens and 4-5" of snow on the ground, we had 3-6 Va
Th's here each day feeding on cracked corn that I spread on the snow near
the sunflower seed tubefeeder. But I'd never before observed a Va Th at our
feeders, nor seen them feed on either suet (or sunflower seeds). The suet I
have in the cages now, incidentally, contains peanuts, which may possibly
have contributed to its attraction.
