Hi Owl Fans:
I took my dog for a walk today just before the Super Bowl. At 2:30 pm
we were at DesMoines Creek Park (there are lots of mixed woods there)
and it was warm (50 degrees) and sunny. I heard a BARRED OWL do its
call "Who Cooks for You". It continued on for at least 15 minutes.
Then we had to leave to continue our walk.
On Friday, Jan 30 at 10am I was down on Russell Rd by the Green River
Natural Resources Area (Kent Ponds). At the big fir tree just south
of Kent Ponds there were two BARN OWLS up in the owl box. A little
after that I was birding in Russell Woods which is a little farther
south on Russell Road. I heard a SINGING HUTTON'S VIREO singing his
repetitive wheet, wheet, wheet, etc. I pished a few times and a very
aggressive male Anna's Hummingbird came in to perch right above my
head and did a couple of its J flights, singing the whole time.
Last Tue, Jan 28 I parked down on the west side of Kent Ponds at dusk.
I was right outside a locked gate on a small gravel road by Russell
Rd. I observed 3 N HARRIERS and one SHORT-EARED OWL flying around
inside the area fairly close to the fence near my car.
Yours, Carol Schulz
