On Saturday evening (2/7/04), Gary Nafis, Joyce
Alonso and I saw a Western Screech Owl in Corbin Park
in (in central Spokane) around 8:00 PM. We were
following up on sighting from the CBC last December.
After playing the tape and walking around the park for
fifteen minutes, we had not heard a response. As we
returned to Waverly street facing the third house to
the east of the intersection with Washington, we saw
an owl fly into a large birch tree in the front yard.
With the leafless limbs, street lights, and snow
cover, it was easy to see the bird. The Western
Screech began calling and flew into the eastern end of
Corbin Park where we observed it both conifers and
deciduous trees. Great views for all and a life bird
for Joyce and Gary as well as a Spokane County bird
for me.
On Sunday, Gary and I birded Mt. Spokane. The trees
surrounding the snow park and magic curve area were
heavily encrusted will snow and frost. No birds of any
sort were to be seen there.
As a multitude of skiers reduced our chances for birds
around the ski lift parking lots, we tried the feeders
around the condos. While a dozen Chestnut-backed
Chickadees were visiting the feeders at the east end
of the condos, a Red Squirrel staked claim to one
feeder for itself. Vociferous Stellar's Jays, a couple
of Gray Jays, Red-breasted Nuthatches, No. Ravens, and
two Red Crossbills filled out the rest of the guest
list. No boreal visitors were noted.
