Header: Heron Monitoring and Advocacy 101.

Seattle Audubon Society's educational series on birds will be offering
a couse on monitoring herons as part of its focus upon herons in
2003-2004. Learn all of the methods related to tracking great blue
heron colonies. Don Norman, who has been monitoring herons since
1988, will teach you how to draw colony maps, estimate productivity,
and translate this knowledge into helping protect heron habitat. One
evening session on March 16 at the Shoreline Center, followed by 3
weekend local field trips in late March, late April, and late May to
learn to track a local colony. Learn more about the course at
donorman at aol.com or call the SAS office at 523-4483for a course
prospectus. Seattle Audubon Society Members $75, non-members $90.
Possible evening course in south or north Puget Sound if enough
interest. Mail your check to Seattle Audubon 8050 35th Ave NE,
Seattle WA 98115

Course is limited to 32 persons. Field trips will be limited to 8
persons per trip (ie there will be more than one day for each of the 3
field trips scheduled). Each person will be require to visit the same
colony on two field trips to learn to draw nest locations on maps of
the colony to learn to track productivity of the colony and be
critiqued on their maps. Emphasis will be placed on colonies close to
attendees.

We have the Cromwell Room reserved for 630-9pm at the Shoreline
Conference Center (just north of Seatle) on Tuesday March 16th at
18560 1st Ave NE. Class will be from 7-9pm. Each person will receive
a booklet with monitoring protocols and forms to use for the course
and their future monitoring. The Shoreline Center is reached by
taking the 175th exit off I-5, turning right onto 175th, then left on
5th NE (the next light) and driving north to 185th, turning left and
back over I-5 then turning right at the light at 1st Ave NE and then
immediately right into the parking lot at the north end of the
building at the Shoreline Center.

The evening class will introduce participants to heron monitoring, its
goals and how they are related to heron protection through the
Critical Area Ordinances in the Growth Management Act. We will also
talk about the requirements of monitoring to help document information
on foraging areas, disturbance, productivity, and attendance.

Field Trips will be scheduled on the Tuesday evening session (and
ideally prior by email) to meet everyone's needs, so they are somewhat
flexible. They will also be able to be rescheduled if weather is bad.

First Field Trip
Afternoons of March 20, 21, and 27th with the 28th if needed.
Locating a colony, disturbance issues, and arrival and depature
monitoring will be discussed. We will meet at 1pm at the Henning
House by Kellogg Island along West Marginal Way in West Seattle,
south
of the West Seattle Bridge. (Take the Delridge Exit off the West
Seattle Bridge, the exit to West Marginal Way rather than taking
Delridge, which loops around under the bridge to the south. Henning
Park is just south of the Grayline Lot). The field trip may also have
a carpool at 65th and Ravenna planned at the evening meeting. After
searching for the heron colony there, we will then drive to the Black
River colony to view its status, or the Kenmore Colony, or the
Issaquah Creek colony, depending upon their status, and the location
of the attendees.

Field Trip # 2 April 17-18, or 24-25th. This trip will learn about
colony maps and incubation and productivity measures, as well as
disturbance. Trip should last 2-3 hours. Colonies will be picked by
attendees if accessible. Field trips will meet at 8-9am and 1-2pm
both days, depending upon the location. Possible field trip locations
will include:

Kiwanis Ravine at the Ballard Locks
Issaquah Creek at Lake Sammamish State Park
Kenmore Park and Ride
West Seattle
Black River
March Point at Padilla Bay
Bainbridge Island is also a possibility if permission is granted.

Field Trip #3 May 17th and 18th. Again Meet at 8-9am, or 1pm,
depending upon site, and lasting again about 2-3 hours. Same
locations at Field Trip #2 for most participants, to track
productivity and look at changes at the colony.
