Hello all,
The WOS field trip started this morning at Hood Park with 15 participants. The first bird of the day was a Northern Saw-whet Owl. The second bird was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Good start to a great day. The next stop was Fishook Park which produced 2 N. Saw-whet Owls, 2 Great Horned Owls (1 on nest). At Hollenbeck HMU we observed 3 Barn Owls, 4 Long-eared Owls, and 2 N. Saw-whet Owls. Also 2 White-throated Sparrows. Our 4th stop was Windust Park where we located 10 Long-eared Owls and 1 N. Saw-whet Owl and a Say's Phoebe. Our last stop was at Big Flat HMU where we relocated the Harris Sparrow. No owling here due to lack of time. So at the end of the day we ended up with 14 Long-eared Owls, 3 Barn Owls, 2 Great Horned Owls and 6 N.Saw-whet Owls for a total 24 Owls of 4 species.
A fun day with an outstanding group of birders. Thank-you to each of you that supported this fieldtrip and your WOS organization.
*Note to field trip participants: If you would like a photo of the group and the N. Saw-whet Owl please email me.
Later, Mike
P.S. On the way home we located 26 Bald Eagles on the Peninsula HMU in western Walla Walla Co..
