Martha,

Barred Owls go on eggs in 2-3 weeks. Great Horned Owls are on eggs now.

GHOWs will typically exchange calls at dawn/dusk while the female is on eggs. Owling.com is also another source for recordings. Males have a lower pitch than do females.

BDOWs are extremely vocal now, and have a call very much as you described as a cat. Even in their caterwaulling, they will typically interject with a "Who Cooks for you?" call. Males are about 1/3 lower in pitch than females. Owlcam.com has the best source for recordings of BDOW calls.

Both species are cavity nesters, though GHOW will also nest in stick nests (Red-Tail Hawks, usually).

In your area, you could be hearing either species.
