Just got word from the US FWS that a complete count of Laysan and
Black-footed Albatross revealed 441,178 Laysan nests and 20,393
Black-footed nests at by 21 volunteers. at Midway Atoll. Nonbreeders
were not counted. That was a bit of poultry.
Nothing said about how many Goonies upchucked on the boots of
volunteers. Yetch! Phew! Last time we banded Albatross out there for two
months was in 1964. We left our aromatic boots and clothes in the
garbage cans so we would be permitted to board on the Navy plane to fly
back to Honolulu. If we hadn't, we'd still be there.
