I conducted the census at the Steigerwald Lake N.W.R. near
Washougal, Clark County, on Saturday 2/28/04. The best birds seen were 1
AMERICAN BITTERN, 2 VIRGINIA RAILS, 1 BARN OWL, 3 PILEATED WOODPECKERS, 2
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 4 TREE SWALLOWS, and 2 SAY'S PHOEBES.
At home while warming up in our hot tub from the day spent in the
rain showers I heard SANDHILL CRANES calling as they flew east up the
Columbia Gorge. Almost all of my Skamania County Sandhill Crane records
have been birds heading east in the early spring.
