The deep freeze predictably brought a couple RB Sapsuckers down from the
mountains, we had two in the yard today. I don't think the feeder has ever
been busier: other than the regulars, we had a first-ever feeder visit by a
Fox Sparrow, one of only a few we've had here, and two Varied Thrushes
picked at the seed fallen to the ground, which seems to happen only during
the real cold spells. The Varieds seemed pretty assertive, driving off
towhees especially, yielding ground only to E. Gray Squirrels. Amazingly,
the local winter resident Townsend's Warbler hung in there with the
chickadee-kinglet flock for one more night, despite the fact that we had
just 12 F. here at dawn. Given the strong possibility of single digits
overnight, this might have been the last hurrah. There was also a
Yellow-rump in the afternoon down in Marysville by the Y.
