Actually the rule is to put 'Cats eating birds' in the subject line before using just the 4 letter codes.

If you are talking about say the Left-Billed Wally Wacker (LBWW) spell it out the first time you use it and include the 4 letters. The rest of your message you can dazzle and amaze the crowds using the 4 letters to your hearts content. All we have to do is look for the first usage of LBWW in the post to know it meaning.


I think that is found in section 8 paragraph 12 in the Tweeter's List Bible.

Unless people want tweeters to be a clique for insiders only to understand, I think it would be best to save them for your scientific feild notes, and not to use them on tweeters at all. If you want to abbreviate to save typing time you could use "r.b. nuthatch" or maybe even "r b sapsukr" so that anyone moderately familiar with local birds could figure it out.
