Hello Tweeters,
The last three days I was really worried that I lost my Anna's Hummingbirds four out of six.We keeping a diary sine our first Anna's appeared on November the 12th 1999 followed by a female on November 20th.All the years we been feeding birds we never had a Anna's in the winter. We was so excited that we wrote every think down in a special book, how many times a day there coming to feed, male or female, and there behavior. So far we can tell we had I saying six birds Patrick say's 5 birds, but I watch this birds more so I keep six
Three days ago, after going to so much trouble to exchanging the feeders when it was so cold,We noticed that the hummers was coming very little to the feeders more less in the morning and than again around three of clock in the afternoon and than only the adults.I was so worried that I was thinking for the worst.
But my worried is all over, today most all the birds was seeing again. The one adult male was perching close to an hour and as the female came it looked as maybe he trying to impressing her moving back and fort on his perch. As she was leaving he chased her around.I also saw the immature males feeding, never together one can never sit down on the perch and hovers, rather the other sitting real steady on the little perch.
So I maybe have an answer to the question wy this birds was feeding so seldom in cold weather. The way I figure that there would staying steady to feed.
The answer maybe that this birds feeding a long time when there on the feeder and than going and rest to there get hungry again being still there burn less energy this way.

Happy birding from Ruth Sullivan
