Sorry I haven't gotten a report in sooner,
My friend Casey Richart and I viewed the
Pink-footed Geese on Friday the 9th. When we arrived
at K St. at 1000 am the geese, both Pink-foots
promptly flew south with a flock of Mallards, across
the bay channel. We were able to see the bill shapes
to deduce that they were not the white-fronteds. We
then went to Ocean Shores for a while, and upon our
return there was one Pink-footed Goose and three
Greater White-fronted Geese at K St. So it appears
that these Geese may move around a little bit, and
that maybe most of us were just getting lucky.
Also, a week previously on the 2nd, Casey and I
saw the Gyr Falcon at the end of Midway Beach rd. We
watched it for quite some time as it was perched on a
log north of the road with a very full crop. It then
flew due East and we watched it fly for at least two
miles into the far clear cuts. We saw it perch once,
and then continue east until out of sight. We drove
much of the distance that it flew to gain perspective
and I think that two miles is being conservative. I
was glad to hear that people have seen it since. So,
If these birds aren't there, they may not be gone
necesarily.
On a side note, I walked a trail today in
Bellingham which runs under marine drive, and there
was a plethora of Lincoln's Sparrows and Fox Sparrows
all over the place.
