I recommend subscribing to Texbirds, the Texas counterpart of Tweeters. It's a great place to find out what's being seen and to network with local birders. The Texas coast and Lower Rio Grande have so many birding hotspots you can't cover them all. Fortunately, the best spots are pretty well known and covered in the ABA Guides, so you don't have to beat the bushes trying to find hidden treasures. I've spent many months there as a "winter Texan," (aka "Snowbird"). My personal favorites are the Santa Anna NWR, Bentsen Rio Grande State Park and Sabal Palms Sanctuary. Mission was my winter home, so Anzelduas County Park was also very handy. Don't overlook the field trips offered by the World Birding Center in Mission. Check out their website at www.worldbirdingcenter.org High Island is a great place during migrations, but apt to be fairly quiet this time of year. However, if you're in that area be sure to check out Annuac NWR and the Audubon Sanctuary at Bolivar Flats. Good luck.

I am planning to do some birding near High Island and Brownsville (Texas) from 1/22 thru 2/4. I have read some books and pamphlets on the area, however, I would appreciate hearing form any of you who have a favorite place(s) you would recommend that I visit while there.

thanks in advance!
