I'm always prepared for trouble, but have not had any. I always carry my
scope in my backpack and put the tripod in my suitcase. I've never had a
problem aside from a momentary pause in the x-ray scanner to check out my
backpack. Since 9/11 we've been on several flights in the U.S. and Canada
(not overseas) and have had no problems. I labelled my tripod with a
sticker that says "camera tripod" for when the suitcase is rifled through,
and no problems there either. My bins go in either backpack or suitcase,
and nary a question. (I use a hard-sided suitcase, since I used to work on
airports and have seen how the luggage was handled)

It's big and bulky, so I'm not looking forward to it. I'm thinking of
shipping the tripod ahead.
