During the snow last week I was having daily visits from a charoal gray/black flicker. The bird is a male with the red malar characteristic of the red-shafted flicker but with the red crescent at the back of the neck characteristic of the yellow-shafted variety. The undersides of the wings and tail were the salmon color characteristic of the red-shafted.
I initially thought it was a standard brown flicker that had slept in a chimney but after watching him every morning it became clear that this is his color. He submits his feeding spot to a smaller male of the standard coloration and moves to feed on the ground nearby.
I took several photos and am happy to share them with anybody who is interested.
