Matt Dufort and I had a very enjoyable day birding on the Waterville Plateau in Douglas County on Wednesday, January 14, 2004. It was the first time birding there for both of us. We found 49 species, highlights are listed below:

California Quail - at least 500: 1 covey of about 200, 1 of 150, plus several smaller coveys
Gray Partridge - 70: ~50 in Lamoine at owl roost mentioned in ABA guide (p383), groups of 16 and 5 on SR-172
Ring-necked Pheasant - 3 males
Horned Lark - 500+ throughout the day in small flocks
Bohemian Waxwing - 20 in Bridgeport at Diagonal St & Arden Ave
Northern Shrike - 3
American Tree Sparrow - 15 with 45 WC Sparrows on Bridgeport Bar
Snow Bunting - 100 on Central Ferry Road (w/GCRF)
Western Meadowlark - 40 on Bridgeport Bar
