I'm sure this won't be the only post but who knows, since I didn't see one
up yet I figured I'd pitch one out there. The Great Black-backed Gull
showed up at the mouth of the Cedar River just after 1:00. I left before
the Gull did so you'll have to ask someone else how long it stuck around.
There were a number of folks covering the area since at least 0830 or so.
Brad Waggoner picked out the bird in the close group behind us while I was
trying to sucker the rest of the group into looking for a 1st year Glaucous
Gull that was way out near Gene Coulon Park and had just recently moved into
the unknown. The bird dropped in unnoticed and just sort of appeared among
the close birds during a time when the gulls were reshuffling. What a
remarkable looking bird! The pictures really don't do it justice. In fact
there are a few birds around that look superficially like the posted photos
but the real thing is unmistakable. Nice going Gene.
On the way home I stopped by and checked out Perry Creek. No interesting
looking gulls while I was there today. There was a Willet at Kennedy Creek
though. That was not bad. Cheers and good birding.
