I don't recall the exact details, but as far as large gulls go Western
and Glaucous-winged aren't as closely related genetically as it seems.
This is why the AOU continues to consider them separate species
even though they freely interbreed. For example, in terms of pure
individuals one recent study strongly suggested that G-w is more
closely related to Thayer's than Western genetically.
