It was chilly and overcast with lousy light this mid-afternoon when I set
out to explore yet another area of my new home. NAD/Soroptimist Park is on
Kitsap Way, heading out towards the "Y" where you'd go left to Seabeck or
right to Silverdale. Am not sure how big the park is acre-wise, but it has
several trails through the woods and I thought it'd be ideal for birding.
It's a mixed conifer-deciduous woods, w/the usual fern-y understory.
Evergreens were mainly cedar, hemlock, and Doug fir; also saw maples and
alder (I think; still need to learn trees).

Saw/heard the usual suspects (no particular order):

Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees
Bushtits
Am. Robins
Golden-crowned Kinglets
N Flicker (female)
Red-breasted Nuthatch

Evidence of Pileated Woodpeckers - long, rectangular woodpecker cuts in
several trees

Bird of the Day was a Red-breasted Sapsucker! One of those lucky finds, I
was looking one way, heard something the other, looked over, and there was
the bird. It may have been as surprised to see me as I was to see it,
because it didn't linger on the tree it had been working on for very long.
With the lousy light it was very difficult to see it as it traveled from
tree to tree. I plan to visit the area in which it was hanging out, as
there were many sapsucker holes in the vicinity.

Would've seen/heard more birds, but some guy kinda followed me into the
woods and I left right away after seeing him. On my way out another woman
warned me that there was a "weird guy" wandering around. We traded stories
re him, decided to call the cops, and then left after speaking w/them
briefly. What a way to ruin a nice outing, stuff like that just makes me
steamed, mumblegrumble mumblegrumble.

Good birding,
Mary
