Hi Tweeters,

Now this could possibly supplant "The Gull".
Fortunately I haven't had to grit my teeth too often
when I am out birding. What seems to me to be
excessive pishing is a comparitively minor peeve and I
usually try to move away from the pisher when I am in
a group situation where I cannot leave. I might get
brave enough to say something if it is breeding
season.

A major peeve was when I was observing the Hudsonian
Godwit at Tokeland. One of the birders there clearly
wanted to flush the birds and made some hand motions
to flush them. I was glad his hand flings did not
work. I didn't think it was absolutely necessary to
see this bird on the wing as the bright supercillium
was obvious and the plain black tail feathers were
clearly visible in scope views with the bird roosting.
I so wanted to say something but even though I am on
the largish end of the scale this person was larger.
Numerous other birders were present and non of them
said anything either. Maybe they didn't see what I
saw... I didn't know what to do, so I kept my mouth
shut.

Also I appreciated the mention of "weirdo's" by Mary
Klein. I have run into a few of those too. They are
not birders (so far), but definitely unsettling. The
only smart thing in that situation to do if you are
out on your own is to leave. I always carry a cell
phone, just in case. Carrying a radio mentioned by
Wilson is good idea, too.

Here's to pleasant, fun, and safe birding.

Cheers.

Kathy
