With only an hour, or so, to spare this afternoon, I went down to the only
unfrozen water in several parsecs to watch the waterfowl.
In spite of the location and weather, several nice highlights were
located.
At Neppel Landing Park (site 27 on the Coulee Corridor bird map) a banded
Canada Goose was observed. The white neck band had H 43 on it and I look
forward to finding out where this goose came from. Also observed at this
location were two Greater Yellowlegs. These birds are apparently wintering
over in the area as 4 were located on the Moses Lake CBC in December. Good
numbers of Northern Shovelers in full dress sifted the surface, while good
numbers of Common Mergansers fished the depths.
At Penn Plaza Kiosk (site 28 on the Coulee Corridor bird map) 43 Great
Blue Herons and 11 Black-crowned Night-herons perched on the snow covered
mud bar. With the white snow as a backdrop, it made for impressive viewing.
A mature Bald Eagle perched along shore near a partially consumed goose
carcass.
