You are right, a license is not needed for FRS. There is another radio
service, for which you need a license, called GMRS. If you have one of those
radios that advertise a 5 mile range, the channels that work over that range
are actually GMRS, not FRS; regular FRS-only radios do not receive GMRS
channels. I've noticed that I seem to be the only birder with a combo
FRS/GMRS radio. Read the packaging carefully to find out which kind of radio
you're buying. I have a license; all it means is that I paid the FCC and
that I know not to use certain channels in or within range of Canada.
