Hi Tweeters:
I ordered the FRS radios by phone yesterday, and they arrived 24 hrs
later at my home, delivered by UPS. Cool. The ad didn't make it
clear, but the T5620 that I ordered has the combination FRS, and GMRS
frequencies. I will only be using FRS channels. The first 14
Channels are FRS, channels 15 thru 22 are GMRS. Each channel has 38
separate codes, so I effectively have 532 different channels when only
using FRS. It is explained in the booklet that you do not need to
licence your FRS channel use. I won't be using the higher number
channels and therefore don't need an FCC licence.
I immediately disabled the call tones and the roger beep (they call it
a talk confirmation tone). These tones were easy to disable, and will
remain that way unless I make an effort to turn them on. These tones
are disturbing to birders who would rather not hear beeping in the
field.
When I bird w/ friends we usually use a private channel and code. But
when we are trying to find out about a bird in the area we tune to the
birders channel and code: that is Channel 11, Code 22. That is
supposedly universal in our country so you can find out where a rare
bird is from other birders not in your party.
