At about 11:15 this morning, the neighborhood
birds staged a full scale invasion of my yard. In all,
I counted about 25 juncos, 6 song sparrows, 4 red
breasted nuthatches, about 10 of both black-capped and
chestnut-backed chickadees, about 17 varied thrushes,
3 brown creepers, about 13 golden crowned kinglets, 2
flickers (red shafted), 2 hairy woodpeckers and a
pileated. The entire ground appeared to be moving, and
our feeders were constantly occupied. At one point, a
female varied thrush jumped up onto the suet feeder,
wobbled precariously on it for a second as it
nervously surveyed the yard, and then spent a few
minuets pecking at the contents. I for one have never
seen them do this (at least in my yard). We use suet
with peanuts in it, so i did not think there would be
anything appetizing for the thrushes.
All in all, a nice way to start a weekend.
