Greetings
Tracey Norris, Ryan Shaw and I went down to the Columbia River today to look
for the Black Phoebes and Harris's Sparrows being reported. Unfortunately
we couldn't locate either species, and it was a bit windy most of the day,
but we did have some highlights.

Friday, 30 January 2004 (9:00am-4:30pm)
Wahkiakum, Cowlitz, Clark County - 75 species.
Rain squalls; variable wind 15-30mph; 40-45F.

Julia Butler Hanson NWR, Wahkiakum Co (9:45-10:30)
Common Goldeneye (1)
White-tailed Kite (2)
Harlan's Hawk (1ad.)
Peregrine Falcon (1 juv)
Lincoln's Sparrow (1)

Woodland vicinity, Cowlitz Co (11:15am-12:15pm)
Tundra Swan (10)
Horned Grebe (1)
Western Grebe (15)
Rough-legged Hawk (1ad.)
Merlin (1): Along Caples Road; very pale tan on back with little to no
malar, seemed a good candidate for the Prairie subspecies.
Sandhill Crane (400)
Thayer's Gull (2)
Northern Shrike (1)
American Tree Sparrow (1): In bushes about 100 yards from the end of
Roberson Road, just off Caples Road; looks like a first county record?
Savannah Sparrow (50)-Caples Road ditch.
Lincoln's Sparrow (10)
White-throated Sparrow (5): West of Lyons Day Park along the river.
Brown-headed Cowbird (4)

Also in the morning were two Barn Swallows along Hwy 4 in Cowlitz Co.

To end the day we stopped and got two Western Screech-Owls screeching near
Lake Fenwick Park (Kent, King County) at 10:00pm.
