Oregon has a crow season that coincides with duck
season and there is no bag limit. It really doesn't
appear to have made much of a dent in the population.
I suspect this is partly because crows remain an
incidental take. Crows aren't deliberately sought out
and hunted so much as shot at when they make themselves
a target.

My concern (and it may be that I've mis-read the rules
as presented on tweeters) is in setting a year-round
season. This puts people with guns out year-round on
the pretext of shooting crows. I have seen frustrated
hunters shoot at other species when the target species
is too difficult. Any hunting season that occurs over
the breeding season opens up the potential for a signi-
ficant breach of trust. And this could have significant
local impact in places where hunter ethics are particularly
lax.

Lethal control of crows needs to remain a management
option. I'm just not sure I like the idea of year-
round open seasons.
