Thanks to Abby and David for the pic and feedback. The pair I have are not
juvenile House Finches. Not even close. Size was wrong, culmen too
straight . . . . all in all just not right . . . but I was narrowing my
initial considerations to adults I regularly see around. Wrong approach.
I took some pics, video, and got some very close looks at the pair I've had
here today. They are remarkably tame, coming to peck at some seed within
just a few feet of people seated and talking. Now, after moving back
through the book more and noting their movement and behavior, I'm pretty
sure they're juvenile Brown-headed Cowbirds. I've never seen any adults
here, so I guess it's a pair of siblings out finding their way in the world.
Intriguing twist to the evening . . . and a new addition to my yard list.
If anyone wants a look at a cozy shot of the two, I'll need help getting it
posted somewhere. I used my wife's Nikon 5400, which is not the best camera
to use through the scope. My 4500 is coming next Wednesday. Then the real
fun begins. Over the coming months, I plan to get into some digiscoping and
working out a way to make my pics available on my own. It's great to have a
hobby you can expand on and share.
