While visiting Pt Reyes this last Christmas, my husband and I had pulled
into a beach parking lot. There on the fence sat a huge Raven and as I got
out of the car to take a picture he strutted over with his head fluffed and
wings held off his body. There were other crows and ravens in the area, but
none approached us. I scrambled back into the car to find some sort of food,
yes I know you are not to feed the wildlife, but hmmm lets see who is it
that showed me how? Yes is was a park ranger who showed me how to feed the
birds..... all we had at hand was some red licorice and he turned up his
nose at it and flew off. And I never got a picture! So a few days later we
returned to the same parking lot, right before returning home, hoping for a
picture this time. There were 3 cars in the lot, and no birds in site. I
got out my camera, put the bread scrap in my pocket and scanned the hills.
And there comes a raven, sailing down to the visitor center, and as I think
I maybe able to walk up to him he flies to me and struts along the fence
rail, this time I snap a few pictures and offer some bread, which again he
does not want. And before I know it our encounter is over and off he flies
back over the hill, does not stop to check out the other cars or people.
Was it the same bird? who knows, but one thing is for certain I will never
forget it.
