Hi Tweeters,

I enjoyed a few hours of exploring some of the Grays Harbor county portion of the Capitol Forest this morning. My main target bird was a Hermit Warbler. I did find two Hermit Warblers up on the D-1000 near Fuzzy Top. Bird activity was awesome in many locations during my drive through the forest. Lots of singing birds and not to forget the good numbers of Black-tailed Deer that I saw. Here's the complete list from my trip starting from the Porter Creek entrance up to the Fuzzy Top area:

Red-tailed Hawk
Ruffed Grouse
Mourning Dove
Rufous Hummingbird
Northern Flicker
Olive-sided Flycatcher
Willow Flycatcher
Pacific Slope Flycatcher
Warbling Vireo
Crow
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Bewick's Wren
Winter Wren
Marsh Wren
Swainson's Thrush
American Robin
Varied Thrush
Cedar Waxwing
Black-throated Gray Warbler
Hermit Warbler
MacGillivray's Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Wilson's Warbler
Western Tanager
Spotted Towhee
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Golden-crowned Sparrow (I was surprised by a singing bird up high)
Black-headed Grosbeak
American Goldfinch

Later in the afternoon, the family and I headed out to Westport to greet some returning salmon fishermen. I did a little birding around the jetty and near the marina. Highlights included Brown Pelicans, Rhinoceros Auklets, and Heermann's Gulls in good numbers out in the channel between Westport and Ocean Shores. I did see two flocks of peeps fly by and one of them did land for a brief time on the rocks of the jetty so I could get a good look. They were Western Sandpipers.
