Hello all, I was hanging out with a friend last night (07/05) who mentioned
that she saw a BROWN PELICAN flying north as she was walking her dog at
Priest Point Park in Olympia on the 4th. This morning I decided to check
all along the waterfront for this bird. My first stop at North Point (KGY
radio station) produced the young BROWN PELICAN perched on a log raft due
north of the point (beyond the large tower with the cormorants). I watched
it preen from about 9:45-10:15 when I went home to make some phone calls. I
then went back down to get some photographs through the scope. It was still
there when I left at about 10:50 AM. I suspect the bird heads towards
Boston Harbor at the low tides and then moves back in to hang out at higher
tides. The pelican has been present from at least the 4th of July,
hopefully it will stick around like the White-Pelicans from Luhr earlier
this summer.

Also here was a BALD EAGLE, CASPIAN TERN (including my first juvenile bird
of the season), PIGEON GUILLEMOTS, and many HARBOR SEAL.

Directions to the spot: Take downtown exit 105 from I-5. Follow signs for
the port, this will turn into Plum Street. Head north on Plum, after you
cross 4th Avenue (Shell station on corner) take your next left onto Olympia
Ave. Follow this along the inlet and then it will head west towards the
Farmers Market. There is construction here, turn right onto Marine Drive
heading north. Follow this through the construction and turn left at the
boat launch area. You will then reach a stop sign at a 'T'. Turn right
towards the water and park straight ahead at the dead end. Look north past
the tallest/closest tower with the cormorants to a large anchored log.

If it isn't here try heading north on East Bay Drive (back at the Shell
station) all the way out to Boston Harbor. At the boat launch there is good
viewing of turbulent waters.
