After another exhaustive but futile attempt to find
TTWO and BBWO in Pend Oreille & Stevens Counties, we
unexpectedly found one WHITE PELICAN (DL. Pg 105, B6)
on Calispell Lake. Matthew Moskik informed me that
this is regarded as pretty rare species in Pend
Oreille County.

Despite the dip on the three toed woodpeckers, Joyce
Alonso, Fran Haywood, and I had a very enjoyable day.
Plenty of Bobolinks greeted our entry into Cusick. On
Tacoma Creek Road, we noted Townsend's Solitaires and
Gray Jays. In Little P.O. NWR, we saw Dusky
Flycatchers, Veery, Cassin's Vireo, Yellow-rumped
Warbler, Townsend's Warbler, and more solitaires.
MacGillivray's & Orange-crowned Warblers, and No.
Waterthrushes called from the understory. A pair of
Bald Eagles cruised over nearby Hatch Lake.

As a light rain began pelting us, we checked on the
Merlin nest in Colville City Park. The chicks have
grown substantially from when we viewed them last
week.

As we handed back into the highlands of Pend Oreille
County, we saw a Black Bear cross the track. A Bald
Eagle nest with at least one chick was visible on the
Pend Oreille River.

When we began scanning Calispell Lake, we saw plenty
of eclipse-plumaged ducks under the air cover of Black
Terns. While Soras called from the marsh, we were
treated to a flock of eight Common Nighthawks.
Although we didn't see any shorebirds, we did see the
aforementioned White Pelican.

Finally, we ended up the day at the wetland bridge
crossing on W. Calispell Road. In the waning light,
Gray Catbirds, Cedar Waxwings, Yellow Warblers,
Warbling and Red-eyed Vireos, were quite active. We
enjoyed close up views of a beaver as it swam under
the bridge.
