I recently read "The Big Year", a book about three birders all trying to set
a record for the most species seen in the ABA area in one year. I know it
has been mentioned here before, but I wanted to add a strong endorsement for
those of you who haven't read it yet. For anyone who has ever mused about
the crazy things birders do, and the quirky culture we have created, this
book is for you. The author is a non-birder (although he has been
converted), so he brings a fresh, outsider's perspective on our collective
behavior. It is is well-written, and would be entertaining for the
"civilians" in your life as well. This is the book that "Birders: Tales of a
Tribe" should have been; it's a hoot, and I think you will enjoy it.
Usual disclaimer, no financial, etc. etc.

Cheers,
