There were some good birds and good breeding birds down at Green River
Natural Resources Area (Kent Ponds) on Sunday, July 11 during the
monthly census. I met the census group at the end of the count, and
heard about the following sightings and highlights:
COOPER'S HAWK fledgling, with adult COOPER'S HAWK bringing it some
prey. The fledgling was perched on the locked gate that is behind the
animal shelter. We knew that the COHA's might be nesting in that
cottonwood grove that is behind the animal shelter, but we could not
really see their stick nest well after the trees leafed out. Now we
can verify that they are breeding. Other neat breeding birds on
Sunday were several LAZULI BUNTINGS, including 2 juveniles. There
also was a brood of RUDDY DUCKS.
Other birds of note: GREAT EGRET, several GREEN HERONS, an AMERICAN
BITTERN, a Peale's PEREGRINE FALCON, an AMERICAN KESTREL pair, a
sub-adult BALD EAGLE, and RED-TAILED HAWKS. BLACK SWIFTS were seen
just before it almost rained. This is the 3rd month in a row that the
group has seen BLACK SWIFTS during the census. VAUX'S SWIFTS were
also seen. There were several WOOD DUCKS. The group said that it was
a good day at Kent Ponds.
