Heck,
many of the manufactures (Swarovski, Nikon, etc) make
adaptors to connect the SLR directly to the spotting
scope, but by replacing the objective lens. So you
end up with a 1200mm equivalent lens, for instance, on
the Swarovsky. It gives you the best optics, but
greatly reduces the magnification and is not a
particularly fast lens. But it is 1200mm (about 24X).
I talked to the Nikon folks at the ABA conference, and
they are working on making adapters between their
spotting scopes and many of their Digital SLR cameras,
and specifically the newer self-contained digital
cameras like the Coolpix 8700. I've been watching and
have not seen them out yet.
