I hadn't paid much attention to silica in any form, but while reading over
a little newsletter I get from Mud Bay, which is a sort of organic store
for pets, the following comment was in an article for cat litter:

"Traditional clumping litters are made of bentonite clay. They're very
convenient, but they contain crystalline silica, identified as a human
carcinogen. Inhaling the dust or ingesting particles can affect a cat's
health. Clay litters have two other problems: they clog plumbing, and clay
is a non-renewable resource." While I don't put anything in the plumbing, I
always thought clay was "renewable," in a sense. And now I wonder if I
should be using this very convenient type of cat litter if it's possibly
unhealthy for my cat and perhaps myself.

On the bird side of this, many people throw cat litter out and some people
use it for a skid resistant source - if birds ingested this, would it hurt
them?
