This morning I drove out to the Westport area to check for shorebirds. I started the day at the jetty in Westport accessed from Westhaven state park. From atop the jetty looking at the beach-side rocks, there was a nice group of rock-loving shorebirds consisting of approximately 10 Black Turnstone, 7 Ruddy Turnstone, and 12 Surfbird. Also, one lone Semipalmated Plover was on the beach near the jetty. Lots of Brown Pelicans and Heermann's Gulls were flying around. One Marbled Murrelet did float by the jetty as well.

My big surprise happened when I was walking back to the car, I was nearing the restrooms when I heard the singing of a Horned Lark. I managed to located two Horned Larks just northwest of the restrooms in the dune grass.

At Bottle Beach, I found 8 different species of shorebirds. They included Short-billed Dowitcher, Black-bellied Plover, Semi-palmated Plover, Western Sandpiper, Whimbrel, Marbled Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone, and one Pacific-golden Plover. At the small bridge along the trail to the beach, I flushed a Green Heron.

Good birding,
