As we observed a display of aurora borealis on Monday
evening (7/26/04), we heard a Barn Owl give it's
scratchy call. The Barn Owl was working the
intersection of Wood Road & Sprague Road out on the
West Plains of Spokane County. Later in the evening,
I saw a Porcupine cross the road.

Today (7/29/04), several of us ventured down to
Whitman County, In Wawawai County Park we turned up
Yellow-breasted Chat, a DC Cormorant, a family of
House Wrens, a baby Catbird, and a Great Basin Gopher
Snake, and an Eastern? Cottontail. On the Wawawai
Grade we found plenty of young BH Grosbeaks, Bullock's
Orioles, Lazuli Buntings, Cedar Waxwings, No.
Rough-winged Swallows, Gray Partridges, both
kingbirds, and a few Rock Wrens, Nighthawks, and a
Barn Owl at Revere.

Texas Lake had plenty of mudflats but few birds (2 W.
Sandpipers & Spotted Sandpiper). Sheep Lake contained
Eared Grebe, WHITE PELICANs -2, Black-necked Stilt -4
, Gr. Yellowlegs - 1, West Sandpiper -1, Baird's
Sandpiper -1, Wilson's Phalarope 10. Steptoe Sewage
Pond held a Solitary Sandpiper, a Spotted Sandpiper,
and a Coyote.

In Lincoln County, we observed one adult Barn Owl and
one baby Barn Owl on their traditional nesting site.
Around Sprague Lake, we were thrilled to see PEREGRINE
FALCON on al lightpole around the northeastern section
of the lake.

On the Adams County stretch of Sprague Lake, we saw
plenty of White Pelicans, Western Grebes -4,
Swainson's Hawk -1, and Black Terns -7.

The weather was sunny and calm with a daily
temperature range from 46-95 degrees. We will be
looking forward to the next wave of shorebirds.
