A SECOND Yellow-br Chat was located in the Tenino area on Monday, May 31.
Directions: Just east of Tenino city limits, take Mull Road north (left) off
SR 507. The FIRST chat (as per previous post) is located at the marsh in the
brush and grass SW (not SE) of the bridge. Continue on Mull to Old Military
Rd, turn right, then next left turn at Vantine Rd. (north). The SECOND chat
was located at 1.1 miles (look for the tall solo fir next to the roadway) in
dense brush along the creekbed to the left. It flushed from the creekbed and
flew into the brush along the roadside. (I stumbled onto this bird while
chasing what turned out to be an aberrant MacG's Warbler song, modified
beyond recognition, delivered frequently and passionately from an exposed
perch 30-35 feet high in a cedar--unusual on all counts.)

The chats are not vocal. The Mull Road chat calls briefly and infrequently
with long spells of silence. Since all my sightings were pretty early and in
this cool weather, I tried noon Tuesday in warmer conditions, but heard not
a peep. The Vantine Road chat (app. 1.5 miles away) was silent, I just
stumbled onto it.

Up to four singing Lazuli Buntings are present in the Scotch Broom along
Melville Rd. off Old Hwy 99 in Rock Prairie just west of Tenino. 80+ species
on Monday morning--great fun!
