The button on image stabilizing binocs is there for a very good reason
-- image stabilization takes a LOT of battery power, so it's important
to use that power only when it's needed.

I handle the battery problem in my Canon 12x36 by using NIMH
rechargeable batteries and carry an extra pair just in case.

While concerns about reliability in such a complex instrument are well
taken, I've had my pair since 1998, with daily use, and no problems so
far. They are the first binoculars I turn to, unless conditions might
be wet or I'm going to a place where a wider field of view is
preferable.
