This morning I got to witness the power of a bird's predator call.
Waiting in line at the Dept of Licensing, enjoying the nice sunshine, I
heard a scolding bird call, tracked it to a Brewer's Blackbird on a
fence nearby. He was pitching quite a fit - loud and raucous scolding.
I watched, trying to figure out what it was scolding, then saw the cat
at the base of the fence. Just as I noted the cat, no fewer than six
other birds joined the blackbird - more blackbirds (male and female), a
couple sparrows and a lovely Red-Shafted Flicker (its wings were just
lit up in the sun!). The cat seemed taken aback by this sudden interest
and slunk away. Once the cat left, the other birds continued about
their daily business.
