So far, I have identified Quiz bird "A" as a Pine Grosbeak and "C" as a
Wilson's phalarope. How about Quiz bird "B"? The photo shows a bird in
mid-flight with wings folded against the body. The light is poor, but we can
see the undersurface of the bill is yellow-orange, the body is dull yellow,
and there is a band of brighter yellow bordered with reddish-orange on the
breast. The tail is dark with some white spots laterally.
So what is it? I haven't a clue. Somebody throw me a bone here. The most
prominant feature of the bird is the breast band, but I can't fit that with
any bird I know, and there isn't much else to work with. So if anyone has
any thoughts, please send them on. The June issue (with answers) is on its
way and time's a wastin'. No need to be embarrased, I guarantee most of your
compatriots don't know either.
