Several of us from the Yakima area went to Hardy Canyon to take photos of flycatchers yesterday. We got some nice shots of western wood peewees and Pacific slope flycatchers.

The highlight of the trip was when I nearly stepped on a brood of ruffed grouse. The female grouse got between me and the babies, flared her tail, jumped up and down, and made several charges at my boots. As the babies made their way to safety, she switched to her broken-wing imitation to lure me away from them. Quite a sight.

Merrilee got some nice shots of a house wren and I took a few shots of a downy woodpecker feeding some babies. A California quail also posed nicely in the brush.
