Sightings for June 6

On June 3, an AMERICAN BITTERN was heard at the end of the E. dyke S. of
Road 22, near Osoyoos (GW,m.ob). Also in the Road 22 region was a male
NORTHERN PINTAIL on June 6 (BL).

A male EURASIAN WIGEON was at Robert Lake on June 5 (GW).

Along Mission Creek in Kelowna, 3 singing RED-EYED VIREOS were near the
Eco-centre and a COOPER'S HAWK was reported (RT).


Sightings for June 3

A pair of CASPIAN TERNS were fishing at Vaseux Lake in the South Okanagan
(BL). Another CASPIAN TERN was seen on the N. side of Powell Beach in
Summerland (TL).

On June 2, four WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS were seen at Raven's Bluff in the
Sunnybrae Tappen area near Salmon Arm (FK).

On the first of June a lingering LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was in the NW corner
of Alki Lake (RT). Also at Alki Lake was a female HOODED MERGANSER and a
singing CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in the Ponderosa Pines on the E. side of the
lake (RT). At Robert Lake were 4 late AMERICAN PIPITS and 10 AMERICAN
AVOCETS, including a breeding pair in the NE. corner of the lake (RT).

Birders should also be on the lookout for a GREATER YELLOWLEGS along
Shuttleworth Creek Road at about km 27.5 in a marshy area on the N. side of
the road (JF). The bird has been acting as if it may be nesting in the area
and if confirmed this would be the first nesting record for the Okanagan.


Sightings for May 30

Rare away from its sagebrush habitat in the South Okanagan, a BREWER'S
SPARROW was singing in a willow hedge along the S. side of Beetlestone Road
just off Benvoulin Road in Kelowna (CC).

At the Chichester Bird Sanctuary in Kelowna an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was
actively flycatching from the tops of the willows near the end of Chichester
Court (CC).

On May 29 at least 2 singing ROCK WRENS were found in Okanagan Mountain
Park, near Kelowna (GW,m.ob). The birds were on the open hillside approx. 2
km W. of the parking area along Lakeshore Road.
