Greetings Birders,
On the way home from the WOS convention on sunday I
spent a night in the Sinlahekin valley, north and west
of Omak in Okanogan county. I found several Common
Poorwills in the gravel road of the extreme south end
of the valley just post dusk. They were very
accomodating, letting me have great views from about
sixty feet away.
Directions:
Driving in from hwy 97 on the Pine Canyon Rd, and just
past Fish Lake (I also saw a black bear here close to
the road in the waning light), I was on the final 100
yards of downslope before intersecting the road from
Conconully when I found the first poorwill setting in
the road, red/gold eye shining in the headlights. The
next 1+ miles of road north, where pine/fir forest
borders both sides of the road, yielded three more
poorwills. Once the road broke out into the open, no
more birds were found.

Good birding,

Ed Kane
