Mystery bird update: http://www.pbase.com/image/29984263

I need to modify earlier size estimate, based on suggestion received from
one observer. He measured the length of recently cut Doug fir needles and
came of with a length of 5 to 6 inches for this bird. Ah ha, out to the back
yard I went, ruler in hand. The new growth needles adjacent to the tail are
uniformly 3/4-inch. Using that I came up with a 5-1/2 to 6 inch length,
shorter than the 7 inch earlier estimate.

This week I'll come back with a summary of suggestions received. Many so far
suggest a juvenile something or other.

As I write this, Mike Patterson, stuck at home in the rain, has come up with
6-inches plus, using Doug fir scientific methods.

Gads. Not sure I'll ever do this again.
