It strikes me how you birders, so accostumed to the comparitive low variability in bird measurements, imposed by the strict engineering constraints of movement, have such faith in the "average" length of Doug-fir needles. I suggest taking a closer look at a few Doug-fir trees, with special attention to the lengths of leaves in sun vs. shade or good soil vs poor soil.

Also, are we certain this is a Doug-fir and not a Grand Fir or some other true fir?
