Yesterday I received my new FRS radios (I lost some recently) from
Best Buy by mail. They are the good kind with 22 channels and 38
codes for each channel. These new radios are FRS/GMRS so we who only
use FRS (does not require a $75!!! dollar licence from the FCC for
General Mobile Radio Service) can only use channels 7-14, w/ 38 codes
for each of these channels. But that still gives us a lot of channels
(actually 266 choices)
which include chan 11, code 22 the universal birder's channel.
I ordered the radios by phone from Best Buy on 6-9-04, and received
them on 6-14-04. There was a P.O. closure for one day during that
time for a Nat'l. Day of Mourning, so it arrived fairly quickly. It
was free delivery, but I paid $3.69 extra for 2-day delivery. The
complete ordering details are in a msg that I had sent to Tweeters
(see below). You can still order as their offer is good through
6-19-04. When I received the radios I immediately disabled the roger
beep, by holding in the plus button while turning on the radio.
(Birders do not appreciate a little musical tone every time someone
tells them something on the radios.) I will continue to use just the
FRS (Family Radio Service) channels even though they only carry 2
miles, because you are not required to have a licence. The GMRS
(General Mobile Radio Service) radios carry 5 miles,
and I know some of the tour groups use those. If anyone is interested
in getting a GMRS licence the new website is:

remember that the licence costs $75. for 5 years.
