I have a more positive reaction to Massey and Zembal's book Guide to Birds of
the
Salton Sea. The census data from several years gives one a realistic idea
about
what one might find in a particular season. Having birded the area almost
yearly for
10 years I have my favorite places already, and didn't rely on it so much for
directions. The directions to the few new places I visited this past winter
seemed adequate. I concede that the chapter arrangement appears to give equal
weight to each of the areas censused which might not be helpful for someone
with limited time. And I didn't like the grouping of the census data at the end
of the book, rather than at the end of each chapter as in Massey's excellent
book on birds of the Anza-Borrego Desert.
